The Most Desperate Hour
By Gerald Reiff © 2022 NiteBluz Music

Verse 1
The clock on the wall says
I should be asleep
My body at rest
My mind in retreat
But the notes on the scale
My fingers repeat
A constant progression
A common refrain
It is in these hours when desperation reigns

Verse 2
The most desperate hour is 3AM
It’s when lost memories
Come creeping back in
The times of blessings
The moments of sin
They all seem so pointless in the
Desperate hour of 3AM

Verse 3
What was it that you once had said?
Must be an echo
Can’t remember now
There’s only the seeds
The fields and the plough
The harvest is gone
Blown away with the wind
All the fields lie fallow in
The desperate hour of 3AM

Verse 4
You know the rules they don’t apply
All the weight rests on one side of the die
The deck is stacked
The table’s on a slide
And an one-armed bandit awaits
To take you for a ride
There's no game that you can win
In the desperate hour of 3AM

Verse 5
Fire’s gone out
Heat’s run cold
Ashes left pile up in the stove
The dawn it cracks
Cars are at my door
I made it through just like I did before
Writing these words
Strumming these chords
The desperation it never ends
But the hour it passes
It’s no longer 3AM
